If you’re hot, they’re hot. Which also means they’re probably thirsty too. Pets like cats and dogs are comprised of about 60%-70% water. And even though they may be thirsty on a hot day, they sometimes will refuse to drink water. Because they require a bit more hydration than we do, it’s important on hot days that you make sure your pet has every opportunity to enjoy hydration. These are our favorite ways to keep our pets hydrated during the hot summer months.

 

Frozen Bone Broth Treats

On a hot day sometimes our bodies don’t tell us exactly that what we are craving is water. Pets are no different. Frozen bone broth treats are like the dog version of a popsicle. Bone broth provides hydration for pets and has lots of good gut bacteria for a healthy tummy. Simply freeze some low sodium or pet-specific bone broth in small ice cub containers and serve to your dog on a hot day. Check with your vet for bone broth recommendations and always confirm with your vet before trying new foods and treats.

 

Frozen Yogurt Treats

Frozen yogurt is the perfect yummy summer treat for both you and your dog. Just like the bone broth, simply freeze yogurt in silicone ice tray containers and serve on a hot day. Make sure you are using plain Greek yogurt or another vet-recommended brand and type. Look for no added sugars and make sure there is no xylitol in the yogurt as that can be poisonous for pets.  Add peanut butter or banana or both for an even tastier treat experience.

Water Down Their Food

Watering down their food not only makes it easier on their teeth and jaw to chew up their kibble but it also provides an extra boost of hydration during meal time. A 30lb dog requires about 2-4 cups of water a day just to sustain normal hydration levels. Larger dogs, like dogs that weigh 70+ pounds require upwards of 8+ cups a day! Use warm filtered water to moisten the kibble each morning and night to make sure you’re maximizing your pet’s hydration levels.
